This is a simple series where the next number is determined by adding 3 to it.
So lets add 3 to each of the number in the series
V = 5
5 + 3 = 8 = VIII
8 + 3 = 11 = XI
11 + 3 = 14 = XIV
Hence we can find the next number by adding 3
14 + 3 = 17 = XVII
To confirm the answer we add 3 one more time to see if we have got the right number in the series
17 + 3 = 20 = XX
Hence answer = XVII or 17
