What you have to do is remove any six of them to make it 10..

If you try to get 10 you will never get it you actually have to get TEN.
Remove 3 sticks from the first box, 1 from the second box and 2 from the last box and you will get 10 as shown below;

A T needs 2 lines, E needs 4, N needs 3.
15 matchsticks minus 6 matchsticks gives 9 matchsticks, exactly what is needed to spell the word ten with one matchstick per line.
Or if it helps to visualize it, remove 3 from sides and bottom of first “square” for a T, one from right side of second “square” for an E, and two from top and bottom of last “square” for an N
Remove a half so that makes it 2 remove 4 more and there are 5 on the other matches 5 x 2 = 10 matches
